What Is NetWalker Ransomware?
NetWalker ransomware is a new campaign started by cybercriminals to infect hospitals and other healthcare networks by utilizing emails that appear to contain information about coronavirus (Covid-19). The email contains a .vbs attachment that “contains an embedded NetWalker Ransomware executable and obfuscated code to extract and launch it on the computer” (BleepingComputer). Alternatively, they also use misconfigured IIS-based applications to gather credentials. Although the NetWalker campaign is new, these strategies deployed by cybercriminals are already known.
Victims will know when they have been infiltrated as notice will be left behind for them to see. The notice will include information and instructions on how to obtain cryptocurrency in order to pay the requested ransom.
